This blond, poster boy actor will always be recalled for playing Bo Duke, one of three mischievous cousins, on the back-country comedy “The Dukes of Hazzard” (CBS, 1979-85). John Schneider has managed to keep an ongoing career, branching out into singing, particularly country music, and recording 11 albums, as well as starring in TV-movies and several failed series. Born and raised in Mount Kisco , New York, Schneider was an unknown when he was discovered by “Dukes” creator Phil Mandelker and given the role of Bo. Although considered the most low-brow program on TV at the time, the CBS effort was hugely popular with segments of the public. But in 1982, Schneider and co-star Tom Wopat walked off the show in a dispute over revenues due them from merchandising. They sat out the next season, but rejoined the show in 1983. By then, the magic was gone, although the series remained on the air for two more years. Schneider also provided voice of Bo Duke for the CBS animated Saturday morning “The Dukes” in 1983.

While the series was still on the air, Schneider had begun building his singing career which included appearing on CBS’ “A Country Christmas” in 1981 and headlining his own special in 1983, also for CBS. He frequently hosted or appeared on the annual Academy of Country Music Awards but it was not until 1990 that Schneider had a shot at another TV series. This time, he played a bounty hunter teamed with a mismatched Paul Rodriguez in the short-lived “Grand Slam” (CBS, 1990). Schneider appeared as Larry Lamont on the ABC daytime drama “Loving” before trying primetime again first on the failed “Second Chances” (CBS, 1994) and then with the syndicated “Heaven Help Us,” a 1994 effort that teamed him with Melinda Clarke as a married couple who died soon after their wedding and became apprentice angels. From 1997 to its cancellation in 1998, Schneider made appearances on “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” as Red McCall, a thief and father.

The actor has kept busy in television-movies, beginning with “Dream House” (CBS, 1981) and co-starred in the small screen remake of “Stagecoach” (CBS, 1986). He had the title role as wilderness hero “Wild Jack” in a three-part “The Magical World of Disney” (NBC, 1989), then played Davy Crockett in “James Michener’s ‘Texas'” (ABC, 1995). Schneider has also appeared in numerous features, although most of were of the low-budget variety that have either played only rural areas where Schneider’s following is strongest or gone straight to video. He co-starred in “The Curse” (1987), playing a man in Tennessee who g s crazy after his food supply is contaminated by a meteor. He could also be seen in the more mainstream Hollywood “Exit to Eden” (1994). A born-again Christian who often sings on religious and country-oriented shows, Schneider has also worked on stage in musicals. He replaced Rex Smith as the dashing, thieving Baron in the Broadway musical “Grand Hotel” in 1991 and has toured in a number of other productions such as “Brigadoon.”

In 1995, Schneider founded FaithWorks Productions to produce family-oriented recordings and videos. Meanwhile, he continued struggling to find work outside the confines of his “Dukes” persona. He starred in the Family Channels’s “Night of the Twisters” (1996), the true story of a family brought together while struggling to survive a night of deadly tornados. After starring in the made-for-television western “The Legend of Ruby Silver” (ABC, 1996) and appearing in an episode of “Diagnosis Murder” (CBS, 1993-2001), Schneider joined his former cast mates for “Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion” (CBS, 1997), then played General Sam Houston in “True Women” (CBS, 1997), a miniseries focusing on the women who helped settle Texas in the mid-19th century. In 1997, Schneider joined the cast of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” (CBS, 1992-1997) in what became the show’s last season, playing the town’s sheriff and potential love interest for Dr. Mike (Jane Seymour).

An episode of “JAG” (NBC, 1995-2005) was followed up with a return to “Diagnosis Murder” as a different character, then a few episodes on the once-popular sitcom, “Veronica’s Closet” (NBC, 1997-2000). After playing Michael Landon, Sr. in the biopic “Michael Landon, The Father I Knew” (CBS, 199), he appeared as an asylum clerk in reenactment scenes for the documentary “Wisconsin Death Trip” (1999) prior to returning to features to play an unknowledgeable weatherman in “Snow Day” (2000). Thanks to high ratings from the first Dukes reunion, a second-and less auspicious-movie-of-the-week, “The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood” (CBS)-aired in May 2000 to less fanfare. A role in a two-part “Touched by an Angel” (CBS, 1994-2003) was followed by a regular series role as the adoptive father of a 15-year-old Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in the popular “Smallville” (WB, 2001-11). At first Schneider was unimpressed with the idea of another Superman-he felt it had been done to death. But after reading the script, he was eager to jump on board. The show was an immediate hit and helped mature Schneider’s career past the adolescence of “Dukes.” Meanwhile, he landed a starring role in the independently-made “Blood Pressure” (lensed 2006), a thriller about a teenage girl abducted by the charismatic leader of a small-town cult whose bizarre rituals lead to a series of unexplained murders.

Dunbar Music Group

presents

Collective Soul

July 11

7pm

Tickets: $49.99 – $129.99

Sponsored by

Holiday Inn Express

River Radio

Ed Roland – vocals / guitar

Dean Roland – rhythm guitar

Jesse Triplett – lead guitar / background vocals

Will Turpin – bass / background vocals

Johnny Rabb – drums / background vocals

It’s probably (well, definitely) somewhat of an understatement to say Collective Soul frontman and chief songwriter Ed Roland is unwaveringly driven in his desire to double down on doing more of what he does best — making music, sweet music, both in the studio and onstage.

“People ask me if I have a hobby, but for me, it’s just music,” Roland confirms. “I mean, I don’t know what else to do, because that’s what I love to do. I live in the studio — but then the time comes when I go, ‘Well, now I wanna go play live.’ I just love the creation of music, and the process of finding out what’s gonna happen with it next. That kinda defines it all for me.”

In following his ever-tenacious muse, Roland is always looking to connect with his current Collective Soul bandmates any which way he can. Actually, the word current is a bit of a misnomer, since Roland truly believes the Collective Soul of the here and now is as permanently intertwined as any group of musicians he’s ever worked with over the course of his illustrious career. “It’s worth noting See What You Started by Continuing was really the demo for this band as it stands right now,” Roland points out, referring to the 2015 album that realigned the rock quintet’s creative compass. “I mean, this is the band for the rest of my life. This is it, man.”

Indeed, if a) 2015’s aforementioned See What You Started by Continuing was the reset blueprint for how a revamped and revitalized five-man lineup fully gels as a unit, and b) 2019’s Blood was the ensuing coagulant further infused by an in-tune rock ensemble clearly firing on all corpuscles, then c) Collective Soul’s upcoming, long-awaited 2022 album release Vibratingsimply sends the band’s artistic spirit into the next stratosphere.

“Our fans have already picked up on that,” agrees Roland, “because they’ve been waiting for Vibrating for almost three years now — and I can’t wait for them to hear it. They’re excited because both See What You Started and Blood set such a high standard for where we’re going as a band — and it’s only going to continue getting better with Vibrating. I really do believe that.”

You can believe it too, for the proof lies within the new album’s deeply delineated grooves. Fact is, Vibrating positively pulsates with the boundless energy that has been Collective Soul’s aural calling card for going on three full decades. From the propulsively gnarly kiss-off of “Cut the Cord” to the reflective midtempo jangle of “Take” to the heart-wrenching reality check of “Rule #1” — replete with a soaring string section, no less! — to the choir-backed emotional crossroads of “Where Do I Go,” Vibrating contains 42 minutes of irrefutable sonic evidence of a band wholly uninterested in sitting still. “I think we’re on a roll,” observes Roland. “We’re not afraid to stretch the boundaries — but we do know how to stay in our lane when we need to. Sometimes, though, we just have to go faster.”

The next logical acceleratory step, of course, resides in taking Vibrating out on the road where the band belongs, and test-driving how this electrifying new material meshes with indelible Collective Soul setlist classics like “Shine,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Gel,” “AYTA,” “Why, Pt. 2,” “Precious Declaration,” and “Heavy” — in addition to more recent, Blood-spawned tracks like “Right as Rain,” “Observation of Thoughts,” and “Over Me.”

“We’re ready to go,” declares Roland. “Most of us grew up together and knew each other as kids, so that helps with the live chemistry. I’ve always said this about this band — we know when to knock each other out, and we know when to hug each other. We won’t put up with any crap, but if you’re feeling down and need help, we’ll pick you up. We’re coming up on 30 years as a band, so we have to be friends first and foremost to keep it all going. If we aren’t friends like that, then we’re not going to have longevity in our career in order to continue doing what we love to do. That’s just the bottom line.”

Seeing eye to eye, and ear to ear, is part of the secret sauce of why Collective Soul continues to both record and play together at an uncompromised level of high quality. “That’s the end goal for everybody in this band,” agrees Roland. “Just because I write the songs doesn’t mean I’m the only one who wants it all to come out right. We all want it to be right — and that’s because this is a band that acts like a band.”

Working in tandem, sharing unbridled opinions, and listening to what everyone else has to say without recrimination are all key proponents in fostering Collective Soul’s perpetual harmony. “That’s the forte of this band,” Roland acknowledges. “We discuss things together, we figure them out together, and we make sure to get everything right. That’s how we love to do it. And I say this out of confidence, and not out of ego — we’re really, really good at it, too.”

You’ll get no arguments here. As 2022 unfurls, it’s clear heaven continues to shine its light down on Collective Soul, a formidable five-man band humming along in unison with many more good vibrations of their own to share with the masses far and wide. There’s a reason Collective Soul are made for me and you — so be sure to see and hear them for yourself first-hand, the next time they make their presence known in your neck of the woods.   —Mike Mettler, official Soulographer

A.J.’s Sirius XM appearance also kicked off the 50th Anniversary celebration of his father’s breakthrough 1972 album You Don’t Mess Around With Jim.  A.J. shared intimate aspects of his revered live salute to his dad, which drew praise this past year for its rare insight into the legendary Jim Croce’s musical canon and the songs that influenced both performers.

Like A.J.’s critically praised concert tribute, CBS Sunday Morning aired a beautiful Father’s Day story featuring background about Jim Croce and an interview with A.J. sharing his memories and musical influences from his own 30-plus year music career and spotlighting the connection of father-and-son’s incredible music tapestry.

A.J. Croce has been a staple of the Americana, AAA, Blues, Top 40 and other charts throughout his own stellar career, releasing ten studio albums that effortlessly transcend multiple genres and have had 20 songs chart in the Top 20 on various radio charts. However, the upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebration of You Don’t Mess Around With Jim has prompted the most affectionate look back yet at his father’s enduring legacy.  The renewed interest leading up to the celebration of the classic album (which was recorded for only $18,000 and spent an incredible 93 weeks on the charts) has inspired a special version of A.J.’s popular ‘Croce Plays Croce’ concert series, with a host of new dates scheduled for this fall.

A.J. crisscrossed the country in 2021 with this unique concert experience to sold out shows and rave reviews: ‘As a considerate tribute, Croce Plays Croce covered just about everything a fan could expect. With A.J.’s stories and sentiment, though, it was elevated beyond a mere musical homage. Instead, the evening felt more like a family reunion.’ – Live Music News & Review

The Nashville based artist is excited for the series of performances of ‘Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary You Don’t Mess Around With Jim’. The upcoming tour dates are scheduled throughout this year with the special 50th Anniversary shows beginning in the fall (more dates to be announced.) The performances promise A.J.’s unique interpretation of Jim’s iconic You Don’t Mess Around With Jim album with a full band and visual presentation of the songs, including indelible hits, “Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels’), “Time In A Bottle,” and others.  The upcoming 50th Anniversary release of the album is to include other celebratory promotions by BMG, Jim’s record company, including the special reissue and accompanying commemorative events throughout the autumn of 2022.

About Jim Croce + You Don’t Mess Around With Jim

Jim Croce found long-overdue success in 1972 following years of struggling to make a name in the music business. That year he released his debut album, You Don’t Mess Around With Jim, which topped the Billboard Album chart for more than a month, spawning the hit singles “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim,” “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels),” and “Time in a Bottle”. His final studio effort, I’ve Got a Name, was released just after he passed in Fall of 1973, ten days after his death. Three more hits (“Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues,” “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” and the title song) came from that album, which reached #2 in the album charts. His records earned three #1’s and ten Top 10’s. His three classic albums (including Life and Timesamazingly were recorded in just a one-and-a-half-year period. Jim Croce was just thirty when he died but helped christen the singer/songwriter era of the early 70s, influencing generations of great songwriters to come.  He has achieved unprecedented record sales for a working-class, solo ‘folk’ artist including The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame induction, surpassing the 50 million sales mark (worldwide) with his memorable self-penned tunes gracing more than 375 compilations. His music continues to be included in major films, TV shows, and commercials including Apple’s Siri Ad, Tarantino’s Django Unchained, the X-Men franchise, Netflix’s Stranger Things and currently in George Clooney’s The Tender Bar.

A.J. was only two years old when his father was killed in a tragic airplane crash in 1973, but came to love and appreciate his dad’s blue-collar, empathetic wordplay and irresistible melodies, “just like everyone else…by listening to the albums,” says A.J. The younger Croce never performed his dad’s song live until he came across a batch of old covers Jim Croce recorded of classic and obscure blues and folk songs, including work by Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, and Pink Anderson.  “I was amazed to discover he was into stuff I was playing myself,” says A.J. The revelation eventually led the singer to conceive the ‘Croce Plays Croce’ concert experience where he delves into both artists’ mesmerizing work, their shared influences and career paths.

As the respected online music database AllMusic states in its comprehensive biography of A.J.’s legendary father: ‘Listening to the songs Croce recorded, one cannot help but wonder how far his extraordinary talents could have taken him if he would have lived longer.’  His son A.J. not only appropriately honors his father’s legacy, but further illuminates the power of the Croce pedigree with an iconic identity all his own.

The Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act will make Illinois just the third state to pass a law mandating paid leave for ALL employees for any reason. While the law does not go into effect until January 1, 2024, now is the time to review your current policies and practices to consider what you will need to do to be in compliance with this new law. Among other things, this new law raises a number of questions for employers, including:

1. What does the new Illinois law on paid leave require?
2. Does my organization fall into any exceptions?
3. How does this state law affect the Cook County and Chicago paid sick leave ordinances that my company is already subject to?

In this webinar, we will tackle these questions, along with a refresher on Cook County and Chicago ordinance requirements for paid sick leave, as well as practical pointers on how to best implement and administer this new leave in conjunction with or in addition to your current leave policies.

Continuing Education Offered: 1.00 HRCI, 1.00 SHRM, 1.00 CLE submitted per attendee request prior to event, 1.00 CPE, and 1.00 HR & Management/Supervision Compliance Credits. Through the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, LRB enjoyed huge chart success with multi-platinum albums and chart topping hits like:

“Reminiscing,”  “Cool Change,” “Lonesome Loser,” “The Night Owls,”  “Take It Easy On Me,”  “Help Is on Its Way,”  “Happy Anniversary,”   “We Two,”  “Man On Your Mind,”  “The Other Guy,”  and “It’s A Long Way There.”

Worldwide album and CD sales now top 30 million. And in 1982 LRB set a record for having had Top 10 hits for 6 consecutive years – In fact, they were the very first band to achieve that remarkable plateau! According to BMI, “Reminiscing” has garnered rare status with over 5 million air plays on American radio, and “Lady” is close behind with over 4 million air plays.

Bassist/vocalist Wayne Nelson joined the band in 1980, and worked alongside founding members with some of the most distinctive harmonies and vocal abilities, creating the unique LRB sound. In 1981, Nelson was recognized by world renowned Beatles producer Sir George Martin whom, while producing ‘Time Exposure’, chose Nelson to record lead vocals on two of the band’s biggest hits, “The Night Owls” and “Take It Easy On Me.” Later that same year, guitarist extraordinaire Stephen Housden joined LRB bringing a rock element into the band’s sound and helped contribute to their string of Top 10 hits. As band members departed one by one, Housden and Nelson worked together to bring LRB into the new millennium.

To date, Nelson’s vocal and bass guitar talents are included on 23 Little River Band Albums/CD’s.  Although Housden has retired from touring, LRB continues to perform to sold out audiences, and Stephen continues to write and participate in all things Little River Band.

In 2004 LRB was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame at the 18th Annual ARIA Music Awards. And in September 2015, the band was awarded Casino Entertainer of the Year at the G2E Gaming Expo in Las Vegas Nevada.

Turning the page brings us to the current lineup of Little River Band…

Keyboardist Chris Marion is a Dove Award winning producer. Chris is the creator of all the orchestral arrangements and charts on The Big Box. It is amazing to watch him play, sing, and conduct from his riser!

Nashville Singer-Songwriter and Guitarist Bruce Wallace plays rhythm guitar and adds a new layer to the vocal harmonies. The addition of Bruce to the line-up has added to the energy of the already highly energized LRB.

Drummer Ryan Ricks has locked down the rhythm section, and rounds out the vocals with his incredible range. Great singing drummers are rare…and LRB is lucky to have Ryan as part of that all-important vocal blend.

Nashville Guitarist Colin Whinnery plays rhythm and lead guitar, and shares lead vocal duties with Wayne. He brings a brand new voice and a fresh outlook to the rhythm section.

Early 2014 saw the release of Little River Band’s, Cuts Like a Diamond,’ on Frontiers Records.  “What If You’re Wrong,” went to #1 and stayed there for 3 weeks says Jim Shoe of CLASSX Radio.  “Forever You, Forever Me,” and “You Dream, I’ll Drive,” both climbed into the station’s TOP 3.

In November of 2016, LRB released, The Hits…Revisited,’ on Wurld Records –  a CD consisting of 9 re-recorded hits along with 2 new songs, written by Wayne, Chris, and Rich.   Kris Kristofferson attended one of their concerts in California. He came backstage after the concert and he told LRB that their harmonies are “better than the Beatles.”

May of 2017 brought the release of ‘The Big Box’ –  a box set consisting of 6 disc’s and featuring a DVD with live footage from their 40th Anniversary Tour.

In 2020, lead singer and bass player Wayne Nelson celebrated a personal and professional milestone of being a member of Little River Band for 40 years. That makes Wayne Nelson the longest standing member in the history of LRB. In partnership with Time Life, the band released a “Live” orchestral accompanied CD of the hits called “Black Tie.” This masterpiece of audio golden nuggets continues to thrill and sooth today.

In 2021, the CD Fan Favorites was released to the fans after they voted on their favorite songs from albums released since the year 2000. This album is a fan exclusive and continues to receive rave reviews from the beloved “Night Owls.”

Bringing their vocal and musical energy along with great arrangements to their timeless classic hits, each show creates new memories for the audience.  The band enjoys watching their fans fall in love with the songs all over again as they are swept up by the show’s powerful performance and the volume of hits from LRB’s history.

With over 100 dates scheduled or being scheduled for their 2021-22 tour, Little River Band is hotter than ever – selling out shows and making music from coast to coast – continuing their legacy of being “the best singing band in the world.”

Little River Band is

Wayne Nelson:  Lead Vocals/Bass

Chris Marion:  Keyboards/Vocals

Bruce Wallace:  Guitar/Vocals

Ryan Ricks: Drums/Percussion/Vocals

Colin Whinnery: Guitar/Lead Vocals
