About our Speaker: Richard Smith 

Richard has worked in technology for over twenty years, beginning as a Radio Shack Manager, then for AT&T (now Comcast) Internet Service Provider before returning to school. He holds three degrees, A.A.S from Joliet Junior College along with a B.S. and M.S. in Geology/Geophysics from SIU.  His time spent as a SIU student was fulfilling through various research opportunities, including work with the Geodynamics branch at NASA/GSFC and various petroleum exploration opportunities in the Illinois Basin.  Richard has spent the last 9 years working in Information Technology at SIU in a variety of roles, including datacenter and cloud infrastructure management as well as information security.

Join the staff of Parkway Manor at Liberty Village of Marion for a special ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of their new 'Memory Lane - Fitness for the Mind' program at their facility. The Ribbon Cutting will take place at 1:30 pm outside, with refreshments and garden tours till 3:30 pm.  We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate and learn about a new program providing specialized care to Marion residents.

July 13th updates:
  • The actual ribbon cutting will be outside on the north side of the building complex – look for a white tent.  They have directional signage at both entrances off of Williamson Co Parkway.  Parking is not available on the south side, please park in the lots on the north side.
  • Because of COVID concerns, we won’t be doing tours inside.  They do have the garden set-up and welcome you to walk around there.  Even though we’ll be outside, please have a mask handy just in case you need it.

Dental Hygiene Blitz - July 19th from 7:30am - 5:00pm
Our Shawnee Health dental clinic will be hosting a Dental Hygiene Blitz for school-age children that will also be on our Marion Campus. We will be offering $40 dental exams. Children do not have to be patients of Shawnee Health in order to receive the exam and parents are welcome to accompany them. Join us for this great offer and a day of fun! Better Government Association President & CEO David Greising will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation at 11:00 a.m. CT Wednesday, July 20.

Greising and Institute Director John Shaw will discuss the BGA’s role as a watchdog in Illinois through investigative journalism and policy advocacy.

The Better Government Association is a nonpartisan and nonprofit news and advocacy organization working for government transparency and accountability in Chicago and Illinois. The BGA – along with the Chicago Tribune – won a Pulitzer Prize this year for an investigative series about deadly failures in Chicago’s building- and fire-safety code enforcement.

Greising joined the organization in 2018. He previously worked at publications including the Chicago Sun-Times, City News Bureau of Chicago, Business Week magazine, Reuters, and the Chicago Tribune. He co-founded the Chicago News Cooperative. He now writes regular columns for the Tribune and Crain’s Chicago Business.

This event is part of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute’s Understanding Our New World virtual conversation series with government and private sector leaders, policy experts, political analysts, authors, and journalists.
