Two poverty simulation events set for November 12 WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (November 2, 2022) – Centerstone, a national leader in behavioral health care, in partnership with Take Action Today and LifeSource Church, will host two poverty simulations on Saturday, November 12 at LifeSource Church, 1011 E. 6th Street, West Frankfort, Ill. While there is no charge to attend, registration is required. Refreshments will be provided. To register as a participant, contact Raney at Kathy.Raney@Centerstone.org. The first poverty simulation event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The second event will occur from 2-4:30 p.m. The agenda for each event will be:
  • 15 minutes – Check-in, light refreshments, meet and greet
  • 15 minutes – Centerstone Connections program
  • 15 minutes – Take Action Today
  • 15 minutes – Discussion on poverty and the simulation
  • 1 hour – Poverty Simulation
  • 30 minutes – Debriefing and conclusion
Each simulation event will involve participants taking on roles of families facing a variety of challenging, but typical, circumstances, as well as roles of community resource providers. Some of the scenarios, provided by the Community Action Poverty Simulation, included:
  • A single parent with limited resources and no transportation must find a way to get to work and get their child to daycare
  • An elderly person must find a way to pay for both utilities and medication
  • A young adult must care for siblings while their parent is incarcerated
  • An elderly couple must raise their grandchildren and deal with their own health and employment issues
“The simulation allows participants to walk in the shoes of someone who is facing poverty and realize how complex and interconnected issues of poverty really are,” said Kathy Raney, Centerstone’s Connections Care Coordinator. “The event helps break down stereotypes of those experiencing poverty by having the participants momentarily experience the challenges that poverty creates.” This training is sponsored by Centerstone’s Connections: Home, Recovery and Community program. Centerstone’s Connections: Connecting with People through Home, Recovery, and Community provides services to individuals, youth-adults, who are Medicaid-eligible and experiencing homelessness and substance use disorders (SUD) or co-occurring disorders (COD) including trauma, PTSD and depression, in Franklin, Jackson, Union and Williamson counties. Connections provides:
  • Housing services, including recovery housing
  • Case management
  • Evidence-based direct SUD, COD, and trauma treatment
  • Assess to federal income supports
  • Screenings and assessments
  • Individualized and integrated substance use treatment and planning
  • Linkages to primary and specialty care
  • Peer and wraparound recovery supports such as employment and education services, benefits engagement and enrollment, hepatitis/sexually transmitted infection/HIV screening/education/counseling

Centerstone, a national leader in behavioral health care, through its Building Compassionate Communities (BCC) project, is sponsoring Dinovember on Thursday, November 17 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main, Carbondale. Join us for a Jurassic Journey! Excavate dino eggs, tinker your own terrible terrarium, and make even more cretaceous crafts! This event can be enjoyed by all ages, but little hands may need the help of an adult. BCC is a multi-year grant Centerstone was awarded in 2019 by the Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation (ILCHF). BCC isn’t a standalone program, rather it supplements both clinical and family services programs within Centerstone and the mental health system of support in Franklin, Jackson, Perry, and Williamson counties. “The foundation of BCC provides our regional system of support with three pillars to strengthen child and family resilience while improving access to healthcare and enhancing overall mental health: networking through collaboration, high quality professional development, and family resource developers,” said Dr. David Mills, Centerstone BCC grant coordinator. The concept of BCC sprang from the ILCHF grant awarded to Centerstone with the overarching goal of improving the mental health of children and communities throughout Southern Illinois.  BCC’s vison is to build compassionate communities by collaborating with regional partners and families to integrate services and create lasting change that directly affects children and families.  Community partners in the four-county region involved with BCC include:
  • Children’s Medical & Mental Health Resource Network
  • Christopher Rural Health Planning Corporation
  • Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department
  • Illinois Department of Children and Family Services
  • Jackson County Health Department
  • Parent and Youth Partners
  • Prevent Child Abuse Illinois
  • Rainbow Cafe
  • Redeploy Illinois
  • Regional Office of Education 21 & School Districts Within
  • Regional Office of Education 30 & School Districts Within
  • Shawnee Health Services
  • Southern Illinois Coalition for Children and Families
  • Southern Illinois Healthcare
  • Southern Illinois University School of Medicine
  • Southern Illinois University System
  • Southern Region Early Childhood
  • University of Illinois Extension
“One of the driving goals of BCC is the development of a well-prepared mental health workforce. To that effect, BCC either directly provides or underwrites in collaboration with agencies in our system of support a wide range of professional development for everyone involved in juvenile mental health initiatives from clients to caregivers to caseworkers to clinicians,” said Dr. Mills. “Additionally, Centerstone can leverage its larger community presence to help all agencies within our system of support to market professional development and networking opportunities they make available, too.” The backbone of BCC is its Family Resource Developer (FRD) program at Centerstone. FRD’s focus on the family by doing the following at home, at school and in the community:
  • Delivering peer support through support groups, phone calls, or individual meetings
  • Providing emotional connection of people who have “been there”
  • Giving informational and educational support on systems and strategies
  • Supporting peers in developing positive ways to address their family’s day-to-day needs, as well as their own self-care needs
  • Helping parents arrange transportation, childcare, etc. when trying to juggle school, doctors’ appointments, sports, extra-curricular activities, budgets, groceries, and family events
FRDs and Centerstone clinical/family services resources, in concert with telehealth or at-home, office, or in-school visits, can help families, regardless of insurance source or diagnosis, with:
  • Mental health screenings
  • Mental health services for youth and family members
  • Juvenile justice system navigation
  • Special education and individualized education plan (IEP) help
  • Reducing stereotypes and stigma related to mental health
  • Preventative care
  • Access to care
  • Immediate and long-term needs for families of children impacted by mental health
  • Peer provided services
  • Support groups
  • Parent education groups
For more information about BCC, visit Centerstone.org, call 1-877-HOPE123 (877-467-3123) or contact Dr. Mills at David.Mills@Centerstone.org. Centerstone, a nonprofit health system specializing in mental health and substance use disorder treatments, will host the quarterly Southern Illinois Opioid Response Advisory Council on November 28 from 1-2 p.m. CT on Zoom. The Southern Illinois Opioid Response Advisory Council was created to help establish a collective understanding of the existing efforts and initiatives occurring in the Southern Illinois region to address the opioid crisis, identify gaps, promote evidence-based strategies and policies designed to combat this public health crisis, and to support the development of  Centerstone's Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) hub-and-spoke model. All sectors of the community are welcome to participate in the advisory council and its meetings. “It is a great way to stay connected with all of the impactful initiatives and life-changing programs taking place across Southern Illinois,” Stearns said. “If you are passionate about recovery, work in healthcare, have lived experience, or want to discover new ways to get involved in the community, I would recommend joining the Southern Illinois Opioid Response Advisory Council.” To register for the meeting, visit http://bit.ly/SIORAC22. For more information, contact Stearns at Samuel.Stearns@Centerstone.org. The Council began meeting in August of 2021 during the pandemic over Zoom and meets quarterly on the last Monday of the month at 1pm CST.
